Tile adhesive calculator: how much adhesive per m²?

Quantities · 7 min read · updated 17 September 2026 · Written by Tilelico

Adhesive quantity depends on considerably more than floor area. Trowel notch, substrate flatness, tile size and application method can each move real consumption by a wide margin.

How much tile adhesive do I need?

Trowel notch:

Adhesive required80 kg
One bag covers about6.25 m²

Trowel figures are orders of magnitude (6 mm ≈ 3 kg/m², 10 mm ≈ 5 kg/m²). The data sheet of your adhesive takes precedence.

Use the product yield

Multiply the covered area by the stated kilograms per square metre, divide by the bag weight and round up. The consumption figure has to come from the documentation for the product you are actually buying.

For 20 m² at 4 kg/m², that is 80 kg — four 25 kg bags with a little left over, or three and a half if you could buy halves, which you cannot. Rounding up is part of the calculation, not a precaution added to it.

Account for application conditions

A larger trowel notch deposits more material, and notch size is generally chosen from the tile format. Moving from a 6 mm to a 10 mm notch is not a small adjustment to the total.

Back-buttering, large formats and an uneven substrate all increase consumption further. Adhesive is not a levelling product: using it to correct a significant substrate defect consumes material and rarely ends well.

Trowel notchTypical tile formatIndicative consumption
6 mmSmall formats, wall tiling≈ 2.5–3 kg/m²
8 mmUp to about 300 × 300≈ 3.5–4 kg/m²
10 mmUp to about 600 × 600≈ 4.5–5 kg/m²
12 mm and aboveLarge formats, exterior≈ 6 kg/m² and above
Orders of magnitude only. The product data sheet is the reference, and back-buttering adds to every line.

Order a practical quantity

Use the actual covered area — the tiled surface, not the room area including partitions and fixed units — round to full bags, and add only a reasoned reserve.

Check the shelf life before storing what is left. Cementitious adhesive has a limited life and is sensitive to damp storage, so a large surplus is not the asset it appears to be.

The figures quoted here describe common practice, not imposed rules. The data sheet for your covering and for your installation products always takes precedence, and measurements taken on site are the reference.

Frequently asked questions

How much tile adhesive per square metre?

As an order of magnitude: about 3 kg/m² with a 6 mm notch, 4 kg/m² with 8 mm, 5 kg/m² with 10 mm and 6 kg/m² or more with 12 mm. Back-buttering adds roughly 1 kg/m². The adhesive data sheet gives the exact figure.

How much area does a 25 kg bag cover?

At 4 kg/m² it covers about 6.25 m²; at 5 kg/m² it covers 5 m². Use the manufacturer’s figure for your tile, notch and substrate.

Does back-buttering use more adhesive?

Yes, appreciably. The exact increase depends on the tile, the trowel and the coverage required by the specification.

Should I calculate adhesive on the room area or the tiled area?

On the tiled area. Partitions, fixed furniture and any untiled zone should be deducted first.
