Travertine Roman opus: the laying and ordering guide

Opus and multi-size · 7 min read · updated 5 November 2026 · Written by Tilelico

Four stone sizes repeat on a 120 cm module, crossing one another to hide any repetition. It is the most requested arrangement in travertine.

Real example · calculated by Tilelico

Patio of 7.00 × 6.00 m, Travertine Roman opus, 5 mm joint

WholeCutCut under 100 mmPlanter

This patio shows the point of calculating by size: the order reads as separate lines, not as an overall number of stones. The central planter and the edges cut the module into many thin strips, flagged on the plan: this is where the grid is worth moving before ordering.

Preparing the job

Check that the stone and adhesive suit the intended use, especially outdoors and for your climate. Stone treatment follows the manufacturer’s sheet.

Open several lots and mix the stones to spread shades from the start.

Step by step

  • Step 1 — Mark a module gridSnap lines at each module pitch in both directions: that is your reference, stone after stone.
  • Step 2 — Dry-lay one full moduleIt serves as the model for the whole team.
  • Step 3 — Lay module by moduleSpread adhesive and always follow the same order to avoid placement errors.
  • Step 4 — Check crossing jointsIn this arrangement, stones overlap neighbouring lines: check alignment along the whole stone.
  • Step 5 — Cut the edgesCuts do not follow the module’s logic: handle them by reference from the list.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering by area onlyWithout a size breakdown, you end up with too many large stones and not enough small ones.
  • Improvising the arrangementWithout a grid, accidental alignments appear, and they show once the floor is grouted.

These pointers describe common practice, not imposed rules. The data sheet for your covering and for your installation products always takes precedence, and measurements taken on site are the reference.

Frequently asked questions

Why do dimensions look smaller than the stated sizes?

This module is calculated joint included: the delivered stone is one joint smaller, so the grid lands correctly.

Can another scale be used?

Yes, in the editor, by setting the base square. The design stays fixed and only the dimensions change.
